Art For Lunch

Kevin van Aelst

I recently discovered the photographs of Kevin van Aelst, who is a contributing photographer for the New York Times magazine. Here’s an excerpt of his artist statement:

My color photographs consist of common artifacts and scenes from everyday life, which have been rearranged, assembled, and constructed into various forms, patterns, and illustrations…This work is about creating order where we expect to find randomness, and also hints that the minutiae all around us is capable of communicating much larger ideas.

Common Clouds, 2007

Cantor Set, 2004

Left Middle Finger, 2007

Cellular Mitosis (krispy kreme), 2005

Apple Globe, 2007

His photographs are vibrant and intriguing. In many of his photographs, he plays with different food, transforming those objects into something entirely different. His humorous and whimsical aesthetic suits the subject matter, not to mention that the photographs are absolutely scrumptious.
